Liberdade Assistida - MARCO Museu de Arte Contemporânea de MS, Brazil, 2022

15 June - 28 August 2022

Raphael Sagarra is showing paintings, drawings and sculptures in the Exhibition entitled “Liberdade Assistida”. The artist starts from a more intimate contact with local residents and people who meet randomly, usually in environments that have some connection with abandonment, and registers through conversations, photographs, drawings and also his own memories, the narratives of happiness, sadness and longing, of these local inhabitants.

“The individuals who live in these problematic environments facing multiple adversities, such as excessive poverty, lack of attention on behalf of the State, or lack of water due to the extremely dry climate, become the body of works that seek to value what is permanently in decline, observing with beauty, and aiming for greater attention to these lives and territories, tensioning the discussion about the right to equality within our society”.

The term “Liberdade Assistida” (Assisted Liberty) is one of the socio-educational measures provided for in law by the Statute of Children and Adolescents, and is intended for adolescents who have committed some type of infraction. Assisted Freedom presupposes a certain restriction of rights and systematic monitoring of the adolescent by a social worker, but without imposing on him the deprivation of his freedom, nor the separation from his family, school and community life. This measure is fixed for a minimum period of six months, and may be revoked, replaced or extended indefinitely if the Justice determines. It is essential that the adolescent's profile be drawn and the reason for his infraction, his social background and family context be understood, so that the guidelines can fully contemplate him.
